Windows 10 users get a new web browser. The web browser replaces Microsoft Edge and will be called Chromium Edge. The new web browser is based on the Chromium open source project just as Google Chrome and a few other web browsers.
The Chromium Edge web browser is installed through Microsoft update to users who have installed the Windows 10 (Fall Creators) 1709 update.
Chromium Edge is more compatible with web standards and should display fewer error messages.
Chromium Edge will also be available for Mac OS X for the first time, Chromium Edge is already available for iOS.
This is good news for software developers. Software developers need to take less account of browser differences on different operating systems.
However, it is questionable whether users want to change to Microsoft’s new Chromium Edge browser. The difference with Google Chrome is not very big, and Google Chrome has a substantial share of the web browser market.
