How to Change Bing to Google (set Google as default search engine)

Internet Explorer and Microsoft both use Bing.com as the default search engine, Chrome has Google.com and Firefox Quantum has changed from Yahoo.com to Google.com as the default search engine.

However, most computer users desire Google as their default homepage and search engine. Google is still number one of choice for lots of people. 

We have noticed that software installations might change the search provider and homepage of your web browser to bing.com, most likely without a decent notice to its users.

As you can see in the image, during the installation of free software you can download from the internet, the installation software offers to install bing.com as default search provider and homepage. When the user agrees the search engine and homepage are changed to bing.com.

How to Change Bing to Google (set Google as the default search engine and homepage)

Internet Explorer

  • Open the internet explorer browser.
  • Navigate to https://www.google.com/homepage/search/sp-ie10.html
  • Click the button “Make Google my default search engine“.

  • Select the checkbox “Make this my default provider”.
  • Click Add to confirm.
  • Restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect.

  • Open the internet explorer browser.
  • In the top right corner, click the “wrench” icon this opens the internet explorer menu.
  • Click Internet Options from the list.
  • In tab: General, replace the default homepage with Google.com
  • by Startup select “Start with home page“.

  • Restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect.

Firefox (Quantum)

  • Open the Firefox browser.
  • Navigate to: about:preferences#search (copy, paste the bold text in the Firefox navigation bar).

  • Open the Firefox browser.
  • In the top right corner, click the 3 lines “menu” button.
  • Click Options from the list.
  • In tab: General, “When Firefox starts” select “Show your homepage“.
  • by “Home Page” enter: https://www.google.com/

Google Chrome

  • Open the google chrome browser.
  • Navigate to: chrome://settings/?search=search+engine (copy, paste the bold text in the Chrome navigation bar).
  • by Search engine used in the address bar select Google from the list.

Change Bing homepage to Google for Google Chrome

In case the default search engine of Chrome has changed to another, instead of the default search engine Google. You can use these instructions to restore Chrome’s default search engine to Google.com.

  • Open the Google Chrome browser.
  • Navigate to: chrome://settings/?search=appearance (copy, paste the bold text in the Chrome navigation bar).
  • Enable the “Show Home button” option.

  • Enter a custom website, i.e. https://www.google.com. This will load Google.com everytime the home button is clicked from the Chrome browser.
  • Navigate to: chrome://settings/?search=startup (copy, paste the bold text in the Chrome navigation bar).

  • Select “Open a specific page or set of pages” click the “Add a new page” button, enter: https://www.google.com/.
    This will set Google as the default homepage in Google Chrome.
  • Restart Google Chrome from the changes to take effect.
