Remove “Windows Product Key” virus (1-844-459-8882 SCAM)


Productkeyupdate is what is known as a Tech Support Scam, it tries to trick you into calling a customer support telephone number. In this case it’s 1-844-459-8882. The virus will fill your entire screen with the “Windows Product Key” window and has a TeamViewer, Supremo, and Logme-in and a CMD button that opens a command-prompt window.

Your computer is suspected of malicious software, for the purpose of verification enter your Windows Activation Pro. You will find your product key on the box that Windows Dvd came in or in the welcome email or on the certificate of authenticity stick.

  1. In the TechSupportScam screen click on the “Cmd” button which will open a command prompt.
  2. In the command prompt type “explorer” and press “Enter”.
  3. In the resulting explorer window navigate to the Chameleon folder, usually “C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Chameleon\Windows” and doubleclick on “iexplore(.exe)”.mbam chameleon
  4. and follow the instructions (“Press any key to continue”). Chameleon will kill the process and start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to finish it up.mbam chameleon
  5. Reboot when prompted to do so and everything should be ok now.

If you do not have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed, please proceed as follows.

  1. In the TechSupportScam screen click on the “Cmd” button which will open a command prompt.
  2. In the command prompt type “taskmgr” and press “Enter”.
  3. In the list of processes select “Productkeyupdate.exe” and click on “End Process”.
  4. Close Taskmanager and in the command prompt type “explorer” and press “Enter”.
  5. In the resulting explorer window navigate to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Productkeyupdate”.
  6. Right click and delete “Productkeyupdate(.exe)”
  7. Close the explorer window and in the command prompt type “shutdown -r”.
  8. You should see a prompt that Windows will shut down within the next minute.
  9. After reboot, download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and perform a free malware and removal scan.
