How to remove

Remove AdminPref profile from Mac

Searchmine installs a profile to prevent users from uninstalling Searchmine, please follow instructions.

Click the Apple icon in the top left corner. Open System Preferences, search for a settingProfiles” (make sure to translate “Profiles” in your Mac OS installed language if your language is other then English) in the upper right corner (Search) within the System Preferences and find a profile called AdminPrefs, click the “-” button to remove the administrator profile.

Adware is known to install a fake administrator profile to prevent users from modifying web browser settings.

If you are unable to find the malicious profile on your Mac, scan with Malwarebytes (free) or Combo Cleaner (paid) to remove the Searchmine adware. There are two versions of Searchmine adware, one which installs a profile and one without a malicious profile.

Uninstall Searchmine extension from Safari

Before we begin, did you check and remove the AdminPref (or any other name) policy from Mac? If so, continue.

Open the Safari web browser on your Mac. In the top left corner click on Safari and select Preferences from the menu.
Open the General tab and change the following settings

Remove homepage from Safari

Safari opens with: A new window
New windows open with: Homepage
New tabs open with: Favorites
Homepage: enter a homepage of your choice.

Remove search engine from Safari

Open the Search tab and change the search engine to Google, Yahoo, Bing or DuckDuckGo.

Remove browser extension from Safari

Open the tab Extensions and remove all extension you don’t know or need with the Uninstall button.
Helpertips, or PlayerWeb are examples of malicious adware – Safari browser extensions, your installed extensions list in Safari may look different.

Remove from Google Chrome

Before we begin, did you check and remove the AdminPref (or any other name) policy from Mac? If so, continue. installs in the Google Chrome web browser on Mac, most often as a browser extension. In this step, I show you how to remove the browser extension from Google Chrome and how to reset your homepage, new tab or search engine to one of your choice.

Remove Searchmine browser extension from Google Chrome on Mac

First, we need to remove the adware browser extension that might be installed in Google Chrome. Some extensions prevent users from reverting the homepage, search engine or new tab as these extensions are controlling the homepage, new tab or search engine settings.

Open Google Chrome, in the right top corner in Chrome, click on the three vertical dots (menu).

Expand the menu and click More Tools > Extensions.

In the extensions panel, search for any unknown browser extensions such as Searchmine and remove the extension(s) with the Remove button. If you have never installed any browser extensions in Chrome on Mac remove all extensions listed.

Reset homepage or new tab in Google Chrome for Mac

Goto the Google Chrome settings, scroll down to “On Startup”. Select Open The New Tab page or Open a specific page or set of pages and enter a homepage URL of your choice in the add a new page field. Save settings.

Reset search engine in Google Chrome for Mac

In the Google Chrome settings, find “Search engine” and open Manage search engines settings.

Find the search engine you would like to set as default e.g. Google, Google search engine will replace the unwanted search engine.

Click on the three vertical dots on the right next to the malicious search engine and click Remove from the list.

Reset Google Chrome sync settings

Next, we are going to remove Synced Chrome settings from Google Chrome. Open Google Chrome Syncronize settings. Scroll down and Click Reset Sync. Close the Google Chrome web browser and restart.

Reset Sync will also remove any saved settings from Google Chrome in the Cloud.

Remove Searchmine with Malwarebytes

Do you still have searchmine after these removal steps?
Perform an adware scan with Malwarebytes (recommended to remove Searchmine, ITS FREE!!) to remove Searchmine from your Mac computer.

In this step, I show you how to remove the browser extension from Firefox and how to reset your homepage, new tab or search engine to one of your choice.

Remove add-on from Firefox on Mac

First, we need to remove the add-on that is installed in Firefox. Some add-ons prevent users from reverting the Firefox homepage, Firefox search engine or Firefox new tab as these add-ons are controlling the homepage, new tab or search engine settings.

Open Mozilla Firefox, in the right top corner of Firefox, click on the three horizontal stripes (menu) and expand the menu and open Add-ons.

In the add-on (extensions) panel, search for the add-on any unknown add-on and remove the addon(s) with the Remove button. If you have never installed any add-ons in Firefox on Mac remove all add-ons listed.

Remove homepage and New tab in Firefox for Mac

In the Firefox Preferences, on the left click on Home. Change Homepage and new windows to “Firefox Home (Default)” or “Custom URL” and enter the homepage of your choice. Also, change the New tabs to “Firefox Home (Default)” or “Blank Page”.

Remove search engine in Firefox for Mac

In the Firefox preferences, click on Search in the left menu. Scroll down a bit and click the button “Restore Default Search Engines”

Scroll up to the “Default Search Engine” settings. Change “Choose the default search engine to use in the address bar and search bar.” to your desired search engine, e.g. Google.
Save settings and restart Firefox.

    Why didn’t Malwarebytes for Mac STOP the installation of Searchmine on my MacBook Pro? Instead Malwarebytes had a popup to restart computer to remove a threat and when it restarted Searchmine was installed on my MacBook! What’s the deal with that?

    I followed all of the steps up until the chrome section (because I do not have Fire Fox). But Search mine is still popping up instead of bing. what could i possibly be doing wrong?

    I could not figure this one out for the life of me! Who knew Admin Profiles existed…well some people do I’m sure but I don’t think I would ever have figured that out!
